Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare - 1019 Words

There’s nothing better than a comedy to lift your spirits up with baskets full of laughter. I like the idea of comedies when there’s a complete misunderstanding, trickery or when things go wrong. For example in one of the episodes of My Wife and Kids when a girl called Claire tells her dad that there will be photograph day in school. So she asks her dad for a massive photograph of her to put on the wall. Her dad said no. On the day of the school photograph when she woke up, her right cheek was swollen-much bigger than the other. As persuaded by her parents she reluctantly went to school. When Claire arrived home she said to her dad thanks for only buying a small picture of me otherwise it would have been a total disaster seeing myself with†¦show more content†¦This trickery is later taken too far, causing Malvolio detrimental distress. Trickery is also displayed in the duel between Sir Andrew and Cesario. Sir Toby’s delight in practical jokes is once aga in illustrated as he plans good sport between Sir Andrew and Cesario, but of course always the assumption that no harm will be done and his arrangements will â€Å"so fright them both that they will kill one another by the look, like cockatrices†. Sir Toby was right. When Sir Andrew and Cesario come face to face they are so frightened that it takes some time for the duel to kick in .The duel is one of the high points of the comedy. Equally absurd is the fact that the pretended duel is the fact that the pretended duel is fought over Olivia who Cesario has rejected her love and Sir Andrew thinks he has a chance with Olivia that he enters a duel on her behalf. Before the duel took place Cesario is worried â€Å"Pray God defend me! A little thing would make me tell them how much I lack of man† Viola speaks in prose which shows how worried and endanger of her true identity being discovered. Shakespeare also applies the comic convention of looking foolish, which constructs one of Twelfth Night’s comedy highlights in Act 3 Scene 4 when Malvolio tries to impress Olivia and tries to impress Olivia and follow out â€Å"Olivia’s command† â€Å"though yellow in my legs† Olivia is baffled byShow MoreRelatedTwelfth Night by William Shakespeare1279 Words   |  5 Pages Within the play ‘Twelfth Night’ it can be argued that the audience may be entertained by the outlook of Malvolio’s gulling. A Day with My Roommate Essay Example For Students

A Day with My Roommate Essay Studying abroad was one of the biggest I’ve ever made. I didn’t know anyone when I arrived in United States and I was just really a freshman like other students who came to Edmonds community college in last spring. Although I was incredibly nervous trying to get to know people and to make friends, I felt excited about moving into the dormitory and having roommates. As I arrived into my dorm, suddenly I could feel all the butterflies in my stomach and my hands trembled really hard. I had a flashback of my sister’s saying â€Å"What if you don’t get along with her? What if she’s a psycho? What if she doesn’t want to be friends with you? † All of those negative thoughts that my sister said about having roommates instantly went around my head. Since one of the Resident Assistants suggested me to enter my bedroom to check whether my room is available for me to use, and I opened the dorm by slowly knocking the door to make sure if there’s anyone inside. When I opened the room I found a girl sleeping on the other bed and my first thought was â€Å"oh great now I’m going to interrupt my future roommate’s beauty sleeptadaaaa! † the RA looked surprised since it was spring break since she probably expected that all of the students had gone somewhere for vacations rather than sleeping in their rooms all day. Slowly I grabbed two of my suitcases into the bedroom because I didn’t want to annoy her by waking her up. Well it turned out that my effort of â€Å"not being an annoying person† actually worked fine for me and I felt a little bit relieved somehow. Since I finished with moving my stuff I went to see the living room of the room and I felt more positive because I imagined myself being independent for the first time in my life. After a few hours I felt bored from sitting and playing my phone in the living room, so I went back to my room to check if my roommate woke up from her sleep. I found her still sleeping peacefully with the same position the last time I went to the bedroom, then I went to my bed to chill and also wait for her to wake up since I really wanted to greet her. An hour late my phone’s battery had gone very low so I needed to charge my phone, then I saw her checking her phone. Immediately I came towards her and said â€Å"HiI’m Sarah and I’m your new roommate† then she looked at me with annoyance written in her face. BOOOOM.. she hated me† that’s all I was thinking about after greeting her. However I tried not to care so much about my failed attempt at being friendly to my lovely roomie, but the thought of not getting along with someone whom you will spend the next few months is utterly worrisome for me. When I finally saw the sunset I knew it was time for me to do other activities rather than wondering what went wrong with my roommate. I started by taking a bath then preparing my food aka instant noodle for dinner. As I checked my phone I saw a missed call from my mother and I went to call her just to make sure that I’m okay (although a part of me wants to scream so bad). â€Å"hi momdid you call me earlier? † I said, then she replied â€Å"heyhow are you? How’s your roommate? † I figured that my mom was going to ask that question. â€Å"She’s fine I guess, but we didn’t talk yet so I suppose things are great here† I sounded sarcastic and my mom said â€Å"Just tell me if things aren’t going well, okay? I think I have to go now, can I talk to you later honey? then I replied quickly â€Å"yeah sure, I’ll talk to you later mom, bye† As our conversation ended I could feel that I was feeling homesick already. I didn’t want to cry over this thing so I decided to sleep earlier since I didn’t want to be late for my morning class I had the next day. When I headed to the room I tried not keep my attention so much on her , and surprisingly she was awake and also watching a television show in her laptop. My bed seemed to be a sweet escape since I could sleep without thinking excessively about anything. .uab5d04633ec5ae35498f4d03b1296749 , .uab5d04633ec5ae35498f4d03b1296749 .postImageUrl , .uab5d04633ec5ae35498f4d03b1296749 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uab5d04633ec5ae35498f4d03b1296749 , .uab5d04633ec5ae35498f4d03b1296749:hover , .uab5d04633ec5ae35498f4d03b1296749:visited , .uab5d04633ec5ae35498f4d03b1296749:active { border:0!important; } .uab5d04633ec5ae35498f4d03b1296749 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uab5d04633ec5ae35498f4d03b1296749 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uab5d04633ec5ae35498f4d03b1296749:active , .uab5d04633ec5ae35498f4d03b1296749:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uab5d04633ec5ae35498f4d03b1296749 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uab5d04633ec5ae35498f4d03b1296749 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uab5d04633ec5ae35498f4d03b1296749 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uab5d04633ec5ae35498f4d03b1296749 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uab5d04633ec5ae35498f4d03b1296749:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uab5d04633ec5ae35498f4d03b1296749 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uab5d04633ec5ae35498f4d03b1296749 .uab5d04633ec5ae35498f4d03b1296749-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uab5d04633ec5ae35498f4d03b1296749:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Civil War Effects All Americans In Different W EssayAt last I grabbed my blanket and tried to find a sleeping position that would help me fall asleep, and then I noticed that she didn’t even bother to turn down the sound from her laptop. After half an hour of holding my frustration I finally told her to reduce the volume, and she instantly plugged an earphone on her laptop. As I woke up in the middle of the night I saw her face looking at me furiously, but then she immediately turned away since she probably realized that I saw her staring at me. I was so frightened because I didn’t even think that it would be like this, but I decided to try to sleep again anyway. However I heard voices coming from her side like â€Å"uh† â€Å"humph† â€Å"Ugh† as she she sounded and looked very irritated at me. The next morning I determined myself to discuss this issue with the housing office director and also ask him to move into another room. After chatting with the director he finally gave me the information of the new room and how much I had to pay since I requested a room for myself. I felt more peaceful and thankful to know that I could live without sharing a room with someone anymore. As soon as I finished signing the new roommate agreements and other papers, I went back to my room to transfer all of my things into the new room. I saw my roommate eating in the living room, and I figured that this is the only chance we could actually talk. â€Å"I’m moving out to another room, so I have to take my stuff back again, is it okay? † I said, but her reply made me realize that it was the one of the best decisions I’ve made â€Å"yeah sure† and she smiled. Thus, this event made me learn that living with someone else is full of surprises; it can turn out good or bad.

Notes & Thoughts On Of Mice And Men Essays - English-language Films

Notes & thoughts on Of Mice and Men Written by John Steinbeck. Born in Salinas, Calif. in 1902. Worked as a laborer and journalist. Focused on the laboring class, dispossessed, underdogs, misfits, castaways, and marginal characters of society _ what to do with them? Concerned with how society treats them. Title is from Robert Burns' poem "To a Mouse" which has to do with planning and the powers beyond over which man has no control _ "The best laid schemes o'mice an' men *gang aft a-gley" (*go awry) and it indicates, or suggests, that plans of Lennie and George will also go astray due to forces beyond their control. Some economists of the early nineteen hundreds theorized that the industrialized age builds a permanent underclass and regardless of hopes and dreams there is no escape because of powers beyond their control. The people doomed to manual day and piece work labor will never be able to escape from their dreary day-to-day existence. Steinbeck focuses on the underdog, the dispossessed, society's misfits and outcasts. What to do with them? Dreams are a major theme in the novel, dreams that can never materialize. Steinbeck suggests that society itself encourages dreams, such as Curley's wife and her dream of becoming a Hollywood star, which can never come to fruition. Characters in Of Mice and Men Lennie Small Imaged as pet/animal, child, white race, victim of nature and society, just pure dumb luck he ended up mentally ill, not his fault, he does not know and cannot learn. Lennie will be discussed through this outline. George Milton Looks after Lennie. Acts as parent, friend, protector, and master. George does not really believe the dream he continually relates to Lennie about their one day getting their own place until Lennie brings Candy and his money contributions into the plan. At that time George says, "Jesus Christ! I bet we could swing her." George can't see that the dream will never materialize. He is doomed to day labor and piece work jobs with no significant gain. George does value Lennie, even loves Lennie, as a friend and partner. They are different because they have each other. This shows that George does not have normal relationships with other men. He relies on a mentally ill man for a friend. Loneliness is also a major theme. George is lonely and likes Lennie's company. He sees Lennie as a pet, a friend, a responsibility, and a helpless person. George is victim of a failed economic system that does not provide for its castoffs. Aunt Clara Lennie's aunt who cared for him but has died. George now looks after Lennie. But, why? That's the big question. Pose this to the class. Have them look for supporting details for their answers. Candy The "swamper" (one who cleans, mops and sweeps up the bunk house) who had his right hand mauled in a piece of farm equipment (ironically a cultivator which is used to produce nourishment but it robs him of the very part of his body that he must have in order to nourish himself) and he is now of almost of no use to the system. His days are numbered and he'll soon be "on the county." The right hand is a symbol of the workingman which Candy no longer is. Thus, he is fast becoming worthless and will soon be dispossessed like his dog. Candy has no chance, or hope, of a future except if he throws his small amount of money in with the others. Irony is that they have no hope without him. Lennie acts as the glue to hold this dream together. Candy's dog A foreshadowing of what will become of Lennie, Candy, Crooks, and all the characters sooner or later. The dog used to be one of the best sheep herder dogs but now is used up, spent, no longer of any economic value. No one but Candy cares what the dog used to be able to do. Now he just "stinks" and can barely get around. This is an excellent opportunity to introduce to the learners the term "foreshadowing." Water Quality and Balloon Essay examples Water Quality and Balloon Essay examples Kyle Kurtz Mrs. Gregory Period 6 April 7, 2013 Exploring Properties of Gases Pre-lab 1) Purpose The purpose of this lab was to perform a variety of experiments that illustrate some properties of air. 2) Procedure Station 1: 1. Place the inflated balloon on a balance, using a piece of tape to hold it in place. Record the mass. 2. Record the mass 3. Place the deflated balloon on a balance (with the tape still attached) and record the mass. Station 2: 1.With its open end facing downward, lower an empty drinking glass into a larger container of water. 2. With the open end still under water, slowly tilt the glass. Station 3: 1. Insert the rounded end of an unused balloon part way into an empty soft drink bottle, stretching the balloon’s neck over the mouth of the bottle. 2. Blow up the balloon so that it fills the bottle. 3. Remove and discard the used balloon. 4. Note: If balloon is already attached, blow it up, and wipe it off. Station 4: 1. Fill a test tube to the rim with water. 2. Cover the test tube rim with a piece of plastic. 3. Press down on the plastic to make a tight seal with the mouth of the test rube. 4. While continuing to press the plastic to the test tube, invert the test t ube above a sink or a pan. 5. Without causing any jarring, gently remove your fingers from the piece of plastic. 6. Repeat the process with the test tube half-full of water. Station 5: 1. Locate the plastic bottle with a small hole in its side. 2. Cover the hole in the side of the bottle with your finger. 3. Fill the bottle with water. 4. Replace the cap tightly. 5. Holding the bottle over a sink remover your finger from the hole. 6. Still holding the bottle over a sink, remove the cap. Station 6: 1. Put on goggles. 2. Place about 10 mL of water in a clean, empty aluminum soft-drink can. 3. Place the can on a hot plate, and bring the water to a rapid boil. 4. Using tongs to handle the can quickly remove it from the heat and immediately invert it into a container of ice-cold water. Station 7: 1. Fill the test tube to the rim with water. 2. Cover the test tube opening with a piece of plastic. 3. While continuing to press the plastic to the test tube, invert the test tube and partially immerse it in a container of water. 4. Remover the piece of plastic 5. Move the test tube up and down, keeping the opening of the test tube under water. 6. Repeat the process with the test tube half-full of water. Station 8: 1. Draw air into a syringe. 2. Seal the tip by placing the cap on the end. If the tip is missing, use your finer to seal the syringe. 3. Holding the cap in place gently push the plunger down with your thumb. 4. Release the plunger. Station 9: 1. Use tongs to submerge on inflated balloon in ice water. 2. Use tongs to submerge the other inflated balloon in hot tap water. 3) Prediction Station 1: The filled up balloon will way more than the deflated balloon. Station 2: The cup will still contain air. Station3: You will not be able to bow the balloon up. Station 4: Water is going to stay in. Station 5: Water will flow out with cap on or off. Station 6: Contract inward. Station 7: Water stays the same and doesn’t change. Station 8: You will not be able to compress it until half way, and then you can compress it anymore. Station 9: Balloon will get smaller in cold water and bigger in hot water. Data Station 1: After I did the experiment I realized the deflated balloons mass was more than the inflated. The mass of the inflated balloon was 2.7 and the deflated balloons mass was 2.9. Station 2: Once I put the cup into the water, the cup wouldn’t fill up with water until I tilted the cup and let air into it. Station 3: I was not able to blow the balloon up because there was no oxygen for the balloon to be blown up in. Station 4: The piece of plastic stuck to the test tube making it so no
